 Preventative Dentistry

Practicing Good Dental Hygiene

Did you know that tooth decay is the second most common disease, following the common cold? Preventive Care dentistry is the ongoing care used to prevent the occurrence of tooth decay and other dental diseases. At Fort Worth Family Smiles, we view preventative dentistry as a total program aimed at avoiding problems.

We can help you with the basic elements of Preventative Dentistry which include:

  • Regular Cleanings
  • Proper Brushing & Flossing Techniques
  • Home Fluoride Treatments
  • Proper Diet Counseling
  • Electric Toothbrushes

Sealants

Dental sealants are thin, plastic films painted on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. They are highly effective in the prevention of tooth decay. Dental sealants are effective on the back teeth as the back teeth contain hard to reach pits and grooves that seem to harbor food and plaque. Sealants are especially beneficial for children because of their newly erupted permanent teeth which are most susceptible to cavities. However, patients of all ages benefit from sealants.

Mouthguards

Mouthguards are made from flexible plastic and custom fit to your mouth. They provide protection during all recreational and athletic activities where there is contact or potential contact with another person or athletic equipment. They are instrumental in protecting your teeth from serious injury and a much needed aspect of preventative dentistry.

With good dental hygiene, patients greatly reduce their risk of getting cavities, gingivitis, periodontitis, and other dental problems. This, in turn, can reduce the risk of secondary problems caused by poor oral health.
